Scope 3 Is Where Emissions Live

Sep 9, 2026 · 7 min read

Ask a company for its carbon footprint and they will show you their offices and their trucks. That is Scope 1 and Scope 2 — maybe 20% of the real number. The other 80% is Scope 3: the suppliers, the logistics, the raw materials, the lifetime of the product itself.

The part everyone skips

Scope 3 is hard because it lives outside your walls. You do not own the data, you cannot see the factory, and your suppliers each report in their own format — if they report at all. So most companies estimate, or worse, leave it out and call it "materiality."

But Scope 3 is where the emissions live. It is usually the single largest share of any footprint, and the one your customers, regulators and lenders now ask about first.

How to find it without a year of effort

  • Start with spend. Your invoices already encode the activity — classify them and you have a first-order estimate.
  • Pull vendor data where it exists. Modern suppliers publish carbon per unit; ingest it instead of re-entering it.
  • Fill the gaps with published factors, and keep the method attached so it can be audited.

GROVE's supply-chain sync does exactly this: it ingests vendor emissions automatically, classifies spend data, and lights up the Scope 3 you have been missing — in weeks, not quarters. You cannot cut what you cannot see, and most of what you need to cut has been invisible until now.
